Dear Amaryllis log…I have been neglectful to you dear blog…I have been spending so much time with your cousin IG (Instagram) and just letting you sit. You have always been there for me and yet I use you as I please. Please dear blog, forgive me… I just have been having a hard time covering off on everything these days. But on a really happy note Charlie O’Shields featured me on his lovely blog Doodlewash. Charlie is a connector of […]
Such a beautiful day to get out there and discover some serious nature! Sometimes I don’t believe the sky can be this blue or this intense, but it is! One of our favorite hiking areas is a county park called Crow-Hassan. The Crow River runs through the park and it has tons of paths every which way, which I’m pretty sure I have crossed over a few times. The polypores were in full force! And some beautiful mushrooms. This one […]
There are so many things to love about fall, including of course the beautiful colors. This post is truly just an observation of the moment, not looking too far ahead or behind. A little afternoon sketching session with my sunflowers. I was inspired by Charlie O’Sheilds at Doodlewash. He paints everyday (as well as posts everyday) and painted a beautiful sunflower earlier in the month. As I was leaving work on Thursday the farmers market stalls were still up. It […]
My job can take me to really unique places including people’s backyards. For the last week and a half I have been on a location shoot and as I wandered around these lovely grounds I found all kinds of wonderful natural treasures which I’m sure the owners would say is yard waste…horrors I think! I try my best to paint every evening to relax myself. Seriously a glass of red wine and a handful of what I deem “interesting subject […]
I don’t mean the company, I mean the real deal…the thing that hit Isaac Newton on the head spurring his theory of universal gravitation or gravity. Of course, who knows if it was really an apple falling and certainly not literally on his head, but it sounds good and for us creative types, a little animation of this image plays in my head nicely. In my case there was gravitational pull to go to an apple orchard because, damn it, […]
I try to paint every night and I usually do. There are a few hiccups in the schedule but I usually put paintbrush to paper and create something. More often I put images up on Instagram than my blog. I guess with Instagram its more in the moment, where blogging takes a little more time. I gave myself a challenge, originally it was to paint for 30 than 60, we’re now up to 120 days (give or take a few). […]
I don’t regularly attend the Minnesota State Fair. I find it’s something you really have to gear yourself up for…hoards of people, crazy food and long lines. My typical approach is to go early and with a plan. It usually works but this year everyone seemed to have the same idea. We were at the fair grounds by 8:15am…as was everyone else or so it seemed. My plan is to take in the innocence of the fair, maybe the foundation, […]
I was having one of those days where I just didn’t feel all that motivated by anything but I knew if I just got outside it would be the perfect solution for the blahs. This was one of those days, it looked rainy…it was gray, I was dull…time to get out! We hadn’t been out to Two Pony Gardens all summer, let’s go! They always have the most beautiful tomatoes… And the most social cat… Chickens to admire…and the most […]
I’m all about the “ordinary” as you probably know. One morning I noticed the beauty of this old worn out dish towel. The sun was hitting it just right and from age, it drapes beautifully…plus it’s blue. Again, this morning, there she sat…waiting… Super simple, super enjoyable.
Test kitty based on a Russian Blue… Line work with gray ink and a Lamy pen. First pass of paint… Final cat… Nightly drawing in the moment. It’s interesting, depending on the paper and how it is prepared the paint will either sit on the surface (as it does with my huaraches) and be more brilliant or absorb into the paper creating a totally different effect (cat). Feather on a much more absorbent paper. Just creating stuff…while it rains.
I try to paint everyday with the theory of 10,000 hours will get me somewhere. Actually I do see improvement and I also find complete bliss in the act of creating so I’m thinking this is a good exercise, even if it only adds up to a pile of paper. At the very least I can burn it and keep warm in the freezing cold winter months for about 5 seconds. Life is such a funny thing. More like a […]
Recently back from a trip home to sunny Southern California…it rained. They need the rain and who doesn’t love rain when it’s warm and you have shorts on! As you have gathered by now I collect a lot of stuff I find. The crab was dead, I just couldn’t help gently gathering him up. My favorite secret beach that few people bother going to. Morning experiment. Cactus grows up at the base of the cliffs. And the wild kitties. They […]
